The need this addresses
A great deal changes at eighteen, and much of it is administrative. Benefits eligibility is reassessed, adult services operate under different criteria, and the responsibility for filings shifts from a caregiver to the young person. Families often learn what was required only after a deadline has passed, and young people leaving foster care face this with the least support of anyone.
What families can expect
- A review of which programs and decisions apply to this particular young person, rather than a generic checklist.
- Help assembling and organizing the documentation each application requires.
- Plain explanation of what each program provides and what eligibility rests on.
- A clear handover, so the family leaves knowing what happens next and when.
- Staff trained through Washington State requirements and our Ripple Method curriculum.
How it is delivered
We meet with the young person and their family, map what is coming against their specific circumstances, and work through the preparation together. Families choose whether to meet in the home, in the community, or remotely by phone or video. Where a question requires legal representation, we say so and refer to an attorney rather than improvising.
Intended outcomes
The aim is that nothing lapses at eighteen through inattention, and that a young person understands their own circumstances well enough to manage them going forward, rather than depending indefinitely on someone else holding the paperwork.
Questions
About this program.
We help prepare and organize. Anything requiring legal representation is referred to an attorney.
It varies by young person and commonly includes federal disability benefits, adult developmental disability eligibility, and disability savings accounts.
No. This is preparation and navigation support. We refer legal questions to counsel.
Around sixteen works well, since it leaves room to gather documentation without deadline pressure. If your young person is already past that, it's not too late to begin — we'll work with the time available.
